Symptoms of Diabetes
The most common
symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus
(Type 1,
Type 2,
Pre-Diabetes, or Gestational) are:
-
extreme thirst, especially for cold
water (polydipsia)
-
frequent urination (going for a wee a
lot) (polyuria)
-
extreme hunger
(polyphagia)
-
tiredness
-
unexplained weight loss, particularly
in muscle
-
feeling sick, possibly
vomiting
-
itchiness
around the groin (due to excessive sugar in urine
causing infections)
-
blurred vision (due to the lens in
your eye becoming dry)
-
wounds
taking longer to heal
Symptoms for Type 1 diabetes can appear
very suddenly – over months, weeks,
or even days.
Symptoms for Type 2 diabetes appear
much more slowly and, more
importantly (and dangerously), some diabetics show
no symptoms at all.
If you have even the smallest suspicion that
you have diabetes, ask your
doctor for a test. Once treatment
begins the symptoms will disappear; early diagnosis and
treatment will reduce the chances of complications and possibly
serious health problems.
But if it remains undiagnosed for
too long with blood sugar levels too high then your body runs a
great risk of being damaged. If you think you might have
diabetes then make an appointment to see your doctor now.
