Measuring Blood Glucose Levels Regularly
(Blood Sugar Tests)
Your healthcare team will be able to advise
you on the way to test your blood that is
best for you, what levels to look for, and what to do if
the results are not as expected.
But some blood test kits may be more
favourable for you – some are easier to use, may be smaller but
more expensive, or may neeed a larger drop of blood but are
more portable. You will have to make the assessment yourself
and accept a trade-off.
You may want to buy more than one, for use
in different situations -- for example you may want one for the
home, one for the car, one for the office, one for use on the
train, and so on. Or you may be perfectly happy with just one
that you take everywhere.
Take care of your blood test
kit and check it for accuracy whenever
you are tested by a healthcare professional.
Blood Sugar
Tests
Taking a blood test is usually a simple
prick in your skin for a drop of blood and then test the blood
– the whole process is done in less than a minute. Your
healthcare professional will be able to advise you how often
this should be. The result should normally be 4 to 7 mmol/l (72
to 126 mg/dl) before meals, less than 10 mmol/l (180
mg/dl) after meals.
