What Can You Do About Bad Breath?
It can be rather uncomfortable, to say the
least, to find yourself in a close conversation with someone and suddenly become aware that the other person has horrible-smelling
breath. It can almost make you want to discontinue the conversation in case it makes you sick! Furthermore, it can be almost impossible
not to react and make a facial expression that makes your feelings known.
The distasteful smell can elicit an almost
involuntary response. This is a difficult situation to deal with and most people will simply want to get away from the smell as soon as
possible. Bad breath is especially nasty for others to deal with but it is important that is dealt with on all levels both personally and as a
friend, relative or work colleague of someone with this problem.
Personal Responsibility for Bad Breath
So what can we do about bad breath? Firstly, everyone
has a responsibility to take good care of their own teeth and organise a good daily routine for oral hygiene to help prevent bad breath. It is
just plain polite to make sure that others don't have to suffer with someone's laziness and lack of personal care. Anyone who knows they
have a problem with bad breath should recognize that fact and take care of the problem to the best of their ability. If they cannot handle the
problem on their own they should seek the help from a healthcare professional -- a dentist or a doctor.
Informing Others about their Bad Breath
When you
find yourself faced with speaking or dealing with someone who has bad breath, it's important to address the situation rather simply avoid it.
Sometimes the other person can have a medical problem that causes them to have bad breath and they are completely unaware of the bad breath
problem or the medical problem. If you tell someone they have bad breath then you just might be saving their life; so, even though this may
be a difficult conversation to have, it is important.
One easy way to open the conversation is to offer the other
person a piece of gum or a mint and perhaps carefully tell them that they may need to see a doctor to find out what their problem is. Or you
could bring up the subject of bad breath and talk about its seriousness and then offer the mint or gum; this should help most people
understand they have a problem. Some people will not, however, take the hint, and will require a more direct approach, with you telling
them they have bad breath and need to do something about it. And although this is a hard thing to do, you have to remember that it is something
that needs to be done.
